A pruned vineyard by EPFL University, Lausanne. Switzerland produces some high quality white wine which is taken with fondue. Wine possibly is as vast a subject as the subjects taught by the university,
École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is a major university in Switzerland. Its beauty is enhanced further with its proximity to the Swiss Alps. The images are taken on a rainy day, even then the the snow capped mountains look attractive.
This is the St-François Church in Lausanne taken from the Lausanne Cathedral at night. From a distance it looks very photogenic. The sharp turrets in gray, are set off against the dark back ground. The church was built way back in 1272, and had been sacked in 1476 as a result of reformation. It was abandoned by the Franciscans in 1536. The upheavals are now gone and today in the night sky it looks like a star.
Lausanne Cathedral is a feast to the eye at night. Built way back in 1175, it has a very high tower which was guarded all through the night to warn people of fire in Lausanne which was fairly wooded then and fires were too frequent. In the wake of reformation, in 1536, the cathedral was robbed of all its treasures. The statue of gold of Virgin Mary was melted in to coins. The Cathedral however still retains its beauty.
Chalet Suisse is a very famous and important restaurant for its fondue. The flavour of the restaurant is unique as it is outside the city limits in an wooded area. The bell shaped shades give warmth to the interiors.
I would never really know how Lausanne would look in daylight. The evening automatically makes everything magical. Even familiar things look enticing. These are two of my favourite images of Lausanne.
Lausanne is a beautiful city in Switzerland, by the Lake Geneva or Lac Léman. Being the head quarters of International Olympic Committee, the presence of the Olympic movement could be seen in many buildings. A park is dedicated to the theme. Though I have stayed for four days in the city, I have never seen it in daylight. All the photographs are taken at night or early morning. the City is French speaking and is on the border of France. Lausanne is the capital of the canton of Vaud.
Why do we get enamoured of the cottages much more than palaces or large buildings? perhaps it has some thing to do with our origins or with simplicity itself. These photographs are snapped from a high rise in Bern
On a rainy day, this is quintessential Bern, Clock towers at the either end of the road. Through the road runs the tram line and the granite paved road gives the impression of older times. Some exclusive shops are there on either side of the road.
A piazza or an open space gives immense beauty to the buildings around it. In the image above, the large square in front of the Swiss Parliament in Bern is a beauty on to itself.
The rains have lit Bern Streets with a soft light. This is the area where one could get the best of Swiss Chocolates. Once every now and then you could see trams passing through.
This is a fascinating museum of its type, the sculptures and artworks seem different, abstract and incomprehensible. That is why perhaps it stays in the memory.
This is an interesting shop window in La Gruyère. The shop however is closed in the morning. The image of Jesus is prominent on the right hand corner. The decorative wood work on the windows gives a casement-like feeling.
